Great weather and super fishing was on tap for the participants in our annual Let’s Talk Hook-up/Rancho Leonero Fun Tournament. This is a three-day tournament where the scores on the two best days count toward the final score. Points are awarded as follows: 50 points for a released marlin, 30 points for a released sailfish, 1 point/lb. for edible fish such as dorado and tuna, 2 points/lb. for wahoo and pargo. We also had a daily jackpot.
This year 38 anglers on 16 teams caught 55 striped marlin
and 25 Pacific sailfish—80 billfish!
This was the best billfish fishing in the 17 years of the tournament. The group also caught a dozen dorado between 25-50 lbs. and
4 wahoo 25-40 lbs. Two weeks before, a guy got a wahoo over 100 lbs. It looked
like a torpedo in the picture.
While most of the boats concentrated on bill fishing , Pam and Phil Bensimon went fishing for roosterfish on the last day and caught and released 9 roosters over 35 lbs., 2 jack crevalle, and 5 barred pargo that averaged 12 lbs., biggest 13.8 lbs. I told Phil that the pargo might qualify for a world record, but he wasn’t interested. Besides, he said, “ I have caught bigger ones”. Pete even caught and released a 35 pound roosterfish from the beach just a short distance from the hotel. Although I can’t guarantee it, and you want to catch a striped marlin or roosterfish, you would have a better chance at Rancho Leonero than anywhere else in the world.
Day # 1 Team Whack-em with Ken Carpenter and Jim Beagin led the way with 3 marlin and 2 sailfish, good for 210 points.Troy Bryant took the daily jackpot with a 28 lb. wahoo.
Day #2 Team Nosostros Chapomos with Kris and Kit Kugel, Mark and Therese Twazny, and Mark Rossell had an awesome day by catching 4 marlin, 2 sailfish and a roosterfish which they caught right at the dock. Good for 345 points. Joe Hashey had the jp with a 40 lb. dorado.
Day #3 Our team, The Gefiltefishers had a great day by catching 5 marlin and a sailfish good for 280 points. However, the day that Pam and Phil that I mentioned. above may have been even better. Jim Beagin had the jp with another 40 lb. dorado. However, Richard Maxa got a 43 lb. dorado, but I forgot to collect his money. I may not have heard the end of it.
1st place went to Carole and me—The Gefiltefishers. We won a trip back to Rancho Leonero plus a day of fishing. I also got a 2-day fishing trip on the First String. Next year will be our 50th wedding anniversary, so I hope you will join us at the Ranch.
2nd place-Nosostros Champonos who got two $75 gift certificates to Fisherman’s Landing Tackle. They also got a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses for the most billfish.
3rd place went to Team Whack-em who got two $50 gift certificates to Fisherman’s Landing Tackle. They were last year’s winner.
The prize of another pair of Maui Jim’s went to Mary Francella of for the biggest edible fish caught by a woman. We had a three-way tie for the biggest edible fish by a man, but Joe Hashey won the tiebreaker and got a beautiful trophy.
Next year, the 18th year, will be June 7-11, 2014. I hope you can join in the fun and great fishing. It is a beautiful time of the year in the east cape of Baja, the group is lots of fun, and Rancho Leonero is a fantastic place. The trip always sells out, so book your favorite room and boat now.
